In case you have been trying to find a way for effective dog flea treatment and ridding your doggy of other parasites, then your search ends with Frontline Spot On and Virbac’s Effipro.

Does your dog look like he's scratching too much these days? Does he stay gloomy and removed all day long? Has he been showing less and less interest in you with every passing day? If all this is happening, then it can make you more depressed than your beloved puppy. A parasite attack on your pet is a serious issue. That is if you are serious about your pet’s well being, and indeed the well being of the rest of your family.

Flea treatments for dogs

You must start developing a systematic plan in order to combat the blood sucking parasites, and that involves doing more than just a single thing. One mode of defence will not get you the results you want. You have to create a multi-pronged system to counter the fleas and the ticks and the lice on your dog effectively. The only problem is that you can not translate that into bombarding your puppy or adult dog with just about everything available for flea treatment.

Both Frontline and Virbac are the manufacturers of a variety of pet drugs, including dog flea treatment programs like Frontline Spot On or the Spot On program by Effipro respectively. Both these brands have created a strong reputation with vets and are amongst the most popular brands in the animal medicine market. Both these products contain the chemical Fipronil as their main ingredient, which gets rid of the fleas or ticks before they can actually land a bite. This provides a great sigh of relief to canines prone to flea related allergies, and is very effective with ticks and lice as well. Both manufacturers have a Flea Spray as well which is extremely handy in keeping fleas away even before the flea breeding season kicks in. Effipro is a marginally cheaper option than Frontline Spot On, when it comes to the pipette drop program. 4 tubes of Effipro Spot On come at the same cost as of 3 Frontline Spot on tubes.

Fipronil is a drug which has been approved for use on domesticated dogs and cats. It functions by irritating the parasite's nervous system and results in paralysis and subsequently, death. The chemical spreads out throughout the body with the help of the natural oils on the skin within a day of applying the drug, and kills off most of the fleas and ticks within a period of 2 days. Fipronil accumulates in the natural oils and hair follicles and is slowly released over a period of at least 4 weeks all over the exterior of the animal. The hair that the dog sheds during this time actually helps in reducing the amount of flea larvae as the chemical is deposited on the hair. The chemical is not washed off even if the dog is bathed or is exposed to sunlight for long periods of time. The place where the medication is applied might look wet and oily for a day or two. Time should be given for the surface to dry out before it is licked or stroked. The treatment should be carried out only once in 30 days.  Fipronil has been successfully tested on mites and demodex too. It is not water soluble and has a hardly any environmental effects.

The major advantage of using the Frontline Spot On or Effipro dog flea treatment is that the resistance towards new infestations with matured fleas last for at least 30 days. It reduces the increment in flea numbers by inhibiting life in the eggs, and therefore resulting in the same in the larvae and the pupae which come from those eggs laid by the larger fleas, for about 45 days after application. It also kills ticks with a persistent efficacy of about 15 days and eliminates lice as well. It is also often used as an integral part of the treatment regimen against Flea Allergy Dermatitis. Overall, this is as comprehensive a solution as there ever will be for pet owners deciding on a dog flea treatment program.

Flea treatments

Frontline Spot On and Effipro for dogs can be administered on puppies which are at least two months old and have a minimum weight of at least 2 kg. And like almost all anti pest chemicals, the dog has to be weighed to check which category of the various products in the Frontline Spot On or Effipro range is to be used, as they are grouped according to the weight of the dog. For example, the different weight categories for dog flea products by Frontline Spot On are enlisted as: below 22 lbs, 23-44 lbs, 45-88 lbs, and 89-132 lbs

Apart from the medical treatments described above, most of the generally recommended precautions for preventing flea in the household and on the pets hold true in case of both felines and canines. Vacuuming on a regular basis and using flea control chemicals on every place where your dog likes to laze around is an important step. This is because of the fact that these areas are the breeding grounds for fleas. Flea eggs as well as adult fleas flourish in these areas. Steam cleaning the carpets and the rugs kill off most of the flea larvae and eggs. Also the use of household flea spray should also recomended, these are used in the same way as a carpet freshner, simply spray the product on carpet and around shaded areas in the house, such as skirting boards etc., and this will help reduce the flea life cycle reoccuring. Household flea sprays are used as part of flea infestation program in conjunction with dog flea treatment products, these together stop the flea life cycle.
